Festivals & Concerts Description

Unleashing vitality and reaching deep into the soul, TarabRaqs effortlessly fuses the foreign with the familiar to emerge with a passionate performance that redefines world music.  With roots in West Virginia and spirit in the Middle East, the four-member family band throws down the glove to stereotypes and rocks the crowd with their jazz-inspired improvisation on traditional Eastern tunes spiced with belly dance.  From the concert stage to the school gymnasium, TarabRaqs reveals the thrill of travel, the appreciation of culture, and the excitement of live performance for every audience.  The group includes Jennifer Carpenter-Peak and Bob, Dakota, and Lhasa Peak.  www.TarabRaqs.com  Youtube/Jensuya1  Facebook/TarabRaqs

School & Library Programs Description

Raqqin' the Kasbah school performances are high energy costumed performances staged to educate through interactive entertainment K-5th, 6-8th, and 9-12th graders in the geography, history, language, music, dance, and culture of the Middle East.  Backed with a multi-media show, the program features one hour of live music on traditional Middle Eastern instruments, folk and belly dance, and interactive lessons in rhythm, melody, dance, language, and geography.  Audiences learn to clap the principal rhythm of the Middle East, enunciate Arabic and Turkish words, hear the differences between eastern and western melodies, dance a traditional line dance called the debke, and identify age-old instruments.  www.tarabraqs.com  Youtube/Jensuya1  Facebook/TarabRaqs

School & Library Programs Description (Alternate)

Schools teach little on the history and arts of Arab and Turkish cultures.  The media, from video games to newspapers, is flooded with sensationalized and stereotyped images of Arabs and Turks.  No wonder many Americans recoil when they hear the term, "Middle East."  Frustrated with the average American's dearth of knowledge beyond the continent, TarabRaqs is on a quest to help change that.  Based in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia and created originally for the love of Arabic and Turkish music and dance, the group has a mission of making accessible to Americans the music, dance, and arts of the Arab and Turkish worlds.  They bring the Middle East to American kids virtually with live music and dance..  www.TarabRaqs.com  Youtube/Jensuya1  Facebook/TarabRaqs
